Podcasting, as defined by the wikipedia, is the distribution of audio or video files, such as radio programs or music videos, over the internet using either RSS or Atom syndication for listening on mobile devices and personal computers.
There are so many types of podcasts available to you, from copies of radio programmes from the BBC and other professional newscasts to quirky broadcasts from just about anyone! You can even make your own podcasts quite easily.
Podcasting is different from normal radio because it allows you to decide when you listen to the programmes you like. You don't miss your favourite show because you were busy or just forgot it was on, just tell your podcasting software you like something and it will automatically get every episode for you.
Podcasts in business
As well as entertainment and news type podcasts, companies like Volvo, General Motors, Heineken, Paradyne (formerly part of AT&T) and Microsoft are using podcasts to disseminate information to staff, partners, the press and the general public.
Sales and marketing staff can listen to sales briefings, product positioning and pricing news, competitor information. Technical staff can listen to the latest product information and technical briefings.
Podcasts in Government
The US and now the UK Government does podcasting as part of the Free Government Information initiative.
Beyond audio
You can go beyond audio though and disseminate all sorts of material via podcasting.
- Training courses, tutorials, manuals and specifications
- Advertising and marketing materials
